song of the day 5.9.11

i saw Social Distortion over the weekend. Great show. You know who really stole the show though? Chuck Ragan. He tore the roof off with just his voice alone on the first song. No instruments. Just him, singing. It was amazing. Chuck's albums have almost never been able to capture the pure, raw emotion and power that he lets loose live.

new music tuesday

what did you buy? I got the new Thursday album "no devolution" which while low on the ragey, thrashing rock, it is probably their strongest sounding album to date. I also got the new Ninja Gun ep and Teenage Bottlerocket's new ep. So far, so good.

Plus, after way more time than a normal person would have spent, i have my iMac and my music ready to go. Now, just need to build those playlists and get those ratings going again. It really was better for me to start fresh.

I always kind of forget about this song.

song of the day 4.11.11

so i got a new home computer over the weekend. My PC was failing and I am kind of sick of PCs as a whole, so I bought an iMac. I'm happy I did. However, the process of transferring my music over has brought up some really, kind of scary, issues. My PC was not keeping thing organized, despite my best attempts. Transferring songs from my external hard drive, which was set to automatically back up the music etc, things were missing, mis-labeled, corrupted and just generally messed up. I had some albums that were only partially saved correctly, some were unreadable and some were just plain wrong. I spent HOURS and I mean HOURS yesterday cleaning it up, thankfully my ipod transferred some of the things that were missing over, about 100 tracks. I was able to find most of the others. I am just going to need to go in and make physical copies of everything i think. But, this gives me a chance to kind of start over with my playlists and ratings etc, which is probably not a bad thing. I had a lot of crap on there.

That being said, the band that first introduced me to Sharks was Gaslight, so here ya go

also, i am debating turning this into a tumblr, seems like there MIGHT be more i can do on there. But i may not since i am not a 18 year old girl who wants to show people my naked ass.

Emery's new album "We do what we want" came out this week, this is one of those new songs, "the curse of perfect days"

Tuesday, March 29, 2011

recent releases worth your time

Emery "We Do What We Want" - the hardest hitting Emery album since "The Weaks end"
We Do What We Want (Deluxe Edition) [+Digital Booklet]

Restorations "Self Titled" - Somewhat ambient groove-ish rock from the singer of
Jena Berlin. Definitely a unique sound.
GET IT HERE

Rise Against "Endgame" - It is a Rise Against record.
Endgame

The Dangerous Summer "An Acoustic Performance of Reach For The Sun" - most people seem to either love or hate these guys for some reason. Just unassuming poppy punk without the synths or neon that their peers have, especially on this acoustic disk.

why even bother saying anything?

My girlfriend and I were talking on the way in to work today about how there are just some people who don't like anything. Or rather, don't ADMIT to liking anything. It came about from me saying I was listening to Cobra Skulls and that I read a review of their new ep and how the dude just tore it apart (including the bad religion cover that he had no idea was a bad religion song) saying how it was not punk and how punk has fallen apart and he misses the old days and blah blah blah same shit everyone who is trying to sound cool says. This was a follow up conversation about a dude I saw on Friday who was very loudly bashing a game his friend and the guy at GameStop were saying was lots of fun.

My lady has a theory on these people, the ones that absolutely have to tear down everything. They are insecure. These people are afraid of saying they like something that someone else thinks is terrible and having to either defend themselves or look like a fool. I think she is on to something. The Gamestop shopper was obviously one of those guys that plays EVERYTHING that comes out and spends a lot of time sitting in front of a game screen. Hygiene seemed to be secondary. The guy who wrote the article had in his little bio that he "barely graduated high school and liked to occasionally write about music" and let me tell you, trying to be funny and ironic about what you do for a living/lack of taking care of yourself is not a statement on how alternative to the norm you can be but is more a statement of "i'm trying to make it look like I don't care what you think of me, but I really want you to know how cool/smart/funny I can be, please notice me." It's the same thing that I have talked about with hipsters in the past.

Here's the thing. Instead of saying how "childish" or "asinine" something is and comparing it to your favorite old bands. Take a look at it as a stand-alone piece of work. If someone said to me, "Man, i thought that game sucked because the controls were shitty" or "that album sucked, the guitar player needs to stop showing off." those are definitive statements. But, if you say "that band sucks because they do not sound like this" that is basically saying that because something does not sound like your favorite, popular friend approved, band, then they automatically suck.

You see this a lot where someone states that they "only like the older stuff" which is usually code for, "this band is popular now, but i need to prove my coolness by showing how i liked them before they were popular and now that they are popular, they suck." Look at a band like Against Me! "Vivida Vis" sounds like it was recorded in the middle of a high school gym with tom not having access to a PA so he had to shout everything and destroy his vocals. Alkaline Trio is another great example, some of those early recordings sound rough. Whether that is because of the recording or the talent, the result is the same. Don't get me wrong, there is a LOT of overproduced music out there, that is not what i am saying, I am saying that these people are saying that something is good simply because it meets a certain condition that they know to be accepted as cool with whatever group they want to be associated with.

Now, I have heard and bought a ton of shitty music at the word of people I know and things i read. But, on the flip side, I have found a ton of great music from the same places. Here's the thing, just because it is different that what YOU personally like, does not mean it is bad. There is music that I bought 4 years ago that I barely want to listen to now. We all change. People who sit and talk shit about everything, even if they secretly like it, are missing out. There is a lot of things out there worth experiencing and if you dismiss it simply because it does not meet your prerequisite ideal, then your attempt at showing how great you are only highlights what a complete loser you are.

Rival Schools "Pedals" came out today

And you should go pick it up. or download it. or buy it on your iphone. or steal it from your buddy. Most of you will search the web with the words "megaupload" "Rapidshare" "download" or whatever. But trust me, this one is worth buying. It sounds and feels like the natural next album after "united by fate"

There is a strong, driving beat on the songs. They sound familiar but new. The choruses are catchy without being poppy. If you are a fan of music, there is something for you on here. Instruments are being experimented with. There is electronic sounds, acoustic, a great mix of everything without letting you forget you are listening to a Rival Schools album. When i put this on for my drive today, I could feel the smile spreading across my face.

"United by Fate" was a huge part of my post-high school/college years and continues this day to get a spin about once every month or two. There was just something about it that was different. Whether it was the vocals or the instrumentation or a blending of the two, there is a sound to Rival Schools that is unique. "Pedals" feels like the next logical step from there. There is not drastic style change. No attempt to do something different. You can hear that everyone in the band has improved at their craft and understands what part they play in the band without following a formula. This does not sound like a re-united band that is trying to re-capture the flame they left behind for an easy release or because their other bands were never as popular as Rival Schools was. This sounds like a band that is making music because they love to make music together.

There are plenty of bands that get their original singer back because people do not like them without that person. There are bands that want you to know they have gotten back together by calling the new album a name that plays off the old ones or just says "part 2" These bands might sound good, but they are just copying something that they knew worked once so cash in and do it again. I don't know anyone from Rival Schools personally, but "pedals" does not sound like they are just trying to reclaim the past.

I recommend the bonus version off of itunes if you are looking to pick up PEDALS

AP's 100 Bands you need to know in 2011-My reactions

I have been a subscriber to Alternative Press for a long time. Every year, one of my favorite issues has always been the "100 bands you need to know" issue. I have always read about each band, circled the ones I like with a pen and then spent months crossing them off as their albums came out and I got to know what the band was offering. Thanks to the internet, I no longer need to wait for an album to drop to see if I like a band, I can just go online. Which is fine. I would still keep the magazine on my desk for days when I felt like checking out a band or doing some general digging about for music. Now, I have never had a year where I have checked out every band, but consistently, there is a good 50-60 bands that I take the time and at least listen to a song.

Sadly, like the magazine as a whole over the last year or so, 2011's 100 bands issue was a big let down. On their site, they call is the "no genre left behind" list. While this may be true, it seems like certain genres are getting a bigger piece of the pie so to speak. I wish I was joking when I say that for a majority of the bands this year, I did not get past looking at their picture and their "sounds like/influences" list. Whether the writers or the bands themselves felt the need to try to be witty or this is just what it has come to for me, but it seems like there was just something missing. For the pictures, there were 4 distinct things you saw: dudes in makeup/dyed black hair, scruffy flannel wearers, hipster dildos or really happy neon/'80s throwbacks. If you get past that, (which i really tried to do) you get to see either some terrible genre classifications, listing of bands that are super popular right now but will be gone soon or a list of super obscure/ill fitting bands that seemed more like an attempt at "look at how deep my musical knowledge is, you don't even know bands that I am referencing." I know I sound bitter, but one thing AP used to do was introduce new things as much as report on what was going on. I would say this time, there was an unhealthy amount of "dace" music being referenced with some other sub-classification. Which, as a whole is starting to get me down.

There are things that make sense to me, "punk rock," "progressive rock," "melodic hardcore." these sub classifications make sense. If you like your hardcore hardcore, you would want to know if a band had some clean melodies in there before you get involved. "pop rock/punk" is another one that makes sense. It is poppy music with guitars. ( i know this is a little too black and white, but it works for example sake). The thing that is getting to is that we are over-classifying music. "prog dance folk pop" is something I saw somewhere. What the hell is that? I mean, I can kind of picture what it is, but isn't most "pop" music inherently dance-y? Folk seems to just mean, they play acoustic guitars and sing softly while sounding like they are in a cabin or around a fire. What I am getting at here is that just like racism, you can label other things too much. I also think it is funny when something is called "post-" something. It is logical, post means after and typically those bands sounds like what should or does come out of something else. A "post rock" band tends to be a wall of sound that rises and falls dramatically. But when you start calling something "post dance" "post hardcore" "post punk" haven't those already been created as disco and rock'n'roll?

But, I digress. What I started this about was the 2011 100 bands you need to know. Here is my take on it. I have about 15 bands that I want to look at further. 10 of the remaining 85 all seem to be over-makeuped metal stuff. 50-60 of the bands have almost the exact same explanation/influences and the rest seems to be bands started by people who were in other bands that fall into the previous categories but now have an indie-rock/folk band. Maybe it is just an off year, maybe this is all there is out there to choose from. I think a band like Red City Radio should have been in there, but no it was mostly poppy stuff. All i can say is at least this was free of that bullshit rap rock sing dance synth radio puke (see what i did there) that seems to be everywhere else. No longer do we have the "we just came to party" bands filling up pages. I guess there is that.

Music A.D.D.

I use a phrase often. I call it "Music A.D.D." or "Music Attention Deficit Disorder" basically, this is when you are doing something, but you cannot get it done because you keep changing your mind/not settling on what to listen to. This happens to me a lot where I will put something on and after 2 songs take it off again. Sometimes I get excited and think "yeah, now this is good" then the next thing I know I am hitting skip or finding something else to put on.

What causes this? When we go shopping or listen to the radio they are always playing a mix of songs and every one of us wishes they would just play "this" song or "that" song. I guess it all goes back to what makes a song and a band memorable. What makes those things stand out from just being background noise. On the flip side, what makes them just be background noise? Then, when you look at it again, if it is just background, why can't we just leave it alone and let it play?

I think it comes down to the level of familiarity and mood of the music. If there is something that is overly aggressive, that seems to benefit a high energy activity. Mellow seems to fit a low impact action. But then there are things that seems to fit everything. These are the bands that have variety to their songs. There is usually some kind of melody that can be picked up and a rhythm that is easy to follow. This is basically the template for Rock 'n' Roll in the purest sense.

I have a lot of bands where i have over a hundred songs each of. Most of these i can put on and just let them play. Especially if i am working, both at home or at the house. Whether it is for my job or for fun, I seem to be able to do this. Maybe it is the variety of the songs. Maybe it is the effect "that one song" has to my mood. Maybe it is just that I can sing along to each word that comes along. I am not sure.

Luckily, today is not a music A.D.D. day but I do have a lot of new music that i have bought and gotten for free that is kind of taking precedent over everything else just because it is new. If i did not have these, who knows what today would have been.

the smoking popes, being from the area i grew up in, have always been a cool, inspiring band. They have a new album coming out in a couple of weeks. I got my copy from Asian Man Records on Saturday. It is great. It tells a story from the view of someone in High School. Since most of the smoking popes fans were in high school when they first got into them (myself included) this album kind of pulls from memories and feelings that have been forgotten, but never really went away either.

That being said, below is one of my favorite, if not my favorite, Smoking Popes song "megan"

a few years ago, the Smoking Popes and Alkaline Trio played a new years eve show. People who were lucky enough to go to that show got a split where the bands covered each others' songs. I was not one of those lucky few, I have tried to buy the record off ebay to no luck. However, thanks to the internet you can hear both songs below. And you know, there are free youtube to mp3 converters out there if you wanted to have a copy of this for yourself. Just sayin

Song of the day

There is a band in the UK called Sharks ///. Yes, as far as i can tell, /// is part of their name. Regardless, this band is something special. I heard about them because they were on the European tour with Gaslight. Sharks/// are doing something special. They feel and sound how The Clash would have been if they were just getting started today. It is pretty damn awesome.

Below is a video where Chuck Ragan sings with them and it is a great back and forth.

it will take some work to find albums of the band, but they are out there. But, you can start at their facebook

new music out today, or that you could buy today if you wanted

Basically, there are 2 things this week:
The Get Up Kids "there are rules" is the amazon deal of the day $3.99 today

It sounds like the next get up kids album after Guilt Show. I mean, it feels and sounds like they only took a few years off, not like they are coming back. I am ok with this.

The other thing i grabbed today was Dave Hause's full Length "resolutions" which i got from the paper and plastick site and you can get at:

http://davehause.com/

Basically, you get to order the vinyl or cd and a full download link gets sent to your inbox. I got the black and red vinyl and the download is pretty damn good.

Song of the day, get it out of the way

this song kind of makes me laugh. That is all, it is just catchy.

hey, 2011, I have some thoughts for you

While I spend most of my time listening to music, i still have eyes and other senses that are available to experience other things. That being said, there are some things that I hope continue to be awesome in 2011 and just as much if not more things i want to die a slow-painful death.
Things that should keep being awesome

Burgers- Yes, burgers. 2010 seemed to a be a great year for burgers, with everyone understanding that it should be cheap and delicious. My personal new favorite is one with a fried egg on it. I am not talking about the trendy, overly priced, gourmet burger bars. I mean a burger. Something everywhere has, but only some places have perfected.

Music- 2010 had a lot of bands taking major steps in terms of maturity and awesome sounding music, The Menzingers, Cobra Skulls, The Gaslight Anthem, Against Me!, all awesome.

Also Music- The change to more talent-driven music away from the electro-trash that was starting to infiltrate punk. Sure, those stupid "dance" bands are still around, but they are not getting the coverage they were. There are plenty of decent electronic musicians and genres out there, but when you sound like everyone else and sing about drinking, drugs and bullshit, there is nothing there.

Tours- every show i saw last year seemed to lean more towards smaller venues and stronger lineups. With multiple bands that could headline alone joining up and playing together.

Finding hidden musical gems on the internet- i probably spent more time in 2010 than ever looking for and seeking out unreleased and out of print songs on the internet

The Hunnert Car pile-up- old cars, huge turnout and lots of great food and bands. Hoepfully 2011 will not be a 90+degree day in october.

bandcamp.com- what a cool way for bands and music to get out there.

Books (and people actually reading them)- I notice this more with my peers and those i work with, but it seems like more and more people are getting back into reading actual books (or e-books). What I mean about actual books is something that is not a magazine, not a political rant that is 100 pages long, but a real, honest book. With stories, plots, characters etc.

Now, the real reason for this blog. Lots of shit that should get shoveled out. Screw slow and painful, the longer these things are around the more painful it is for others.

tight pants- I am talking about the jeans that are skin tight. Look like they are painted on and not at all comfortable. Plus, they look dumb tucked in to your ugg boots. Hey ladies, they make you look fat, not slimmer and dudes, i feel like my regular jeans can be too tight for my balls, so i do not know how those can be remotely comfortable. (baggy pants are gross too)

mustaches- any and all of them on anyone under 40. But primarily the stupid twisted, handlebar mustaches to be found on "cool" people.

Indie Bands that sound like every other indie band- stop whining. I don't care how your synth sounds. The low-fi sound is cool, but not when you add so much chorus to your voice it sounds like you are singing in an '80's after-school special.

the '80s: i am really tired of everything being neon, splatter-painted, or generally looks like something david lee roth designed.

Concert Tickets increasing- 2010 had tickets for $25 each that were $17 in 2009. In a time when we are all hurting for cash, charging more is not the way to get more $$ at the end of the night.

douchy hipsters infiltrating everything fun- seriously, if you are going to try so hard to look like you don't care or are too cool to be there, don't be there. Go talk to your friends somewhere else. The ultimate way of showing you don't care would be to be someplace else entirely.

People in their mid-to late-twenties pretending they are still in college. Keg stands and beer bongs when you have a job and adult responsibilities are kind of lame. Actually, i never really saw the reason for any of that bullshit party crap. "i want to drink so much i cannot remember what happened" fuck you

fake glasses- I am a wearer of glasses. I cannot see otherwise. But, there is a huge trend in 2010 where people would wear fake glasses. Either frames with plastic lenses or empty frames. I cannot tell you how many times i have seen someone wearing a pair of the modern 3-d glasses that they popped the 3-d parts out of. Or how about this, people wearing contacts wearing fake glasses to "look smarter" how fucking dumb is that?

my gut- i am really tired of having it, so i am going to work on it.

In all, 2011 has been pretty decent for music: social d, bouncing spouls/hot water music split, cobra skulls, wolves and the radio...i think that is what i have purchased in 2011 that came out in 2011. I want a burger

Song Of the day, early edition

Wolves and the Radio are one of those bands that I heard about, but did not really hear play anything. I downloaded their album this week and it is definitely something good. Hot Water Music fans will find something here to like.

Amazon is jacked up and calls them "the wolves" but you can get the album below the video

bonus song for friday of a long weekend

song of the day

i used to be creative with this thing, but lately, I have had a musical rut going on with the same bands over and over. Usually something breaks me out of this rut, but I am still digging deeper and deeper in the same bands week after week.

Trusty Chords, song and lyrics

Have you ever tried to read the lyrics for Hot Water Music's "Trusty Chords" and follow along to the song? that song has been one of my favorites for years and it continues to amaze me at how well it is written.

try it yourself below

"You'll get it right sometime. You will."
I tell myself that everyday.
"You don't need to latch on to anything.
You'll just end up back here
In your little limbo scene."
It's repetitious and exhausting.
I might need some therapy;
Anything to keep me in check through the day.

Don't think about your lover.
You're already steady shaking."
I might need a sedative,
But I hate the taste of medicine.
"You just need to let her go."
These pills shaking in my hand
Just make me feel defeated,
Like I'm not able to just let her go away.

(Chorus)
I hate this place but I love these chords.
"An empty fate just means an even score."
And the pain this morning...
It filled my head.
It's Jameson.
It means that I'm not dead.

And I just can't seem to get away
There's no such thing as escape,
Even with the sedaives
You're always in the same state,
Clutching to a limbo scene.
You're never changing anything,
You just stop the shaking.
And it's constantly repeated through the days.

keep the Lucero going

My Best Girl

song of the day, January 6, 2011

Lucero is consistently one of the best bands you can listen to and/or go see live. Today, when looking for unreleased stuff, I found out about Ben Nichols' earlier band called Red Forty. You can find their complete discography for download if you look hard enough, like I did earlier today through mediafire.

Anyway, I have yet to finish everything with the download and listening to etc, but I found this video of Ben Nichols playing a song called "the outsiders" which was a Red Forty song. IT sounds great.

Nightmares For A Week "Don't Die"

Nightmares for a week are a band that are doing what they like. Making music they enjoy. While their first ep, "a flood tomorrow," sounded more like Against Me!, Lucero or similar folk-inspired bands, their new album "don't Die" definitely leaves the jangly honky-tonk behind for a "classic" American sound. However, a lot of people are comparing this album to The Gaslight Anthem and Against Me!. To be honest, I do not really hear it. What I hear in this album is "On A Wire"-era The Get Up Kids. Yes, The Get Up Kids. I am going to have to say that either music critics are trying to find something today to relate this sound to or they are just are seeing what each other is writing about bands and using the same references.

I downloaded "Don't Die" this morning, after not being really interested in it when it came out. If I heard this playing in a casual setting as background music, or caught it while i was doing something else, I would probably have thought it was the new Get up kids album.

All in all, I am glad i purchased this, if not for the somewhat unique sound, but for the fact it reminds me of a time when there was a lot more music being made that got me excited. At time when I was purchasing music every week, because there was that much good stuff hitting the shelves. I have already listened to it start to finish 2 times, in 3 hours, and 3 will be starting after I finish the 'stones album I put on during lunch. So far, there are some songs that are standing out to me, and some that definitely sound like they came off "a flood tomorrow" and I am liking it.

hey, ho, let's go (home)

I really don't want to be at work, I don't think anyone does. It is just one of those days.

Ever hear of a band called Pegboy? Anyone? They are an older band, and a pretty badass one at that. I first heard of Pegboy from Matt Skiba when he played with Chuck Ragan a few years ago. I missed the boat the first time, but the more I paid attention, the more I noticed bands I liked, happen to like Pegboy, so I checked them out. This is a prime example of one of my favorite things about music, finding out what bands you like listen to, opens the door to things you may have never heard of otherwise.

new Social Distortion song from LA Times

take a listen and preorder it at itunes if you want to

Social Distortion - California (Hustle And Flow) by Epitaph Records

back to work, songs of the day

YES, I said SONGS of the day. Plural.

Further Seems Forever have gotten the (original) band back together and released a 7inch last week or 2 weeks ago or something. Well, I have yet to find a place you can buy it in non-vinyl form, BUTTTTTT I got it yesterday and it sounds really good. ANNNNDDDD someone posted the songs on youtube, if you are handy with your music and computer, might want to listen to the below songs.

I personally think the second one sounds better, but that is my opinion. Both of these songs showed up as full-on electric versions on "the Moon is down" the first Further record.
